Dunlop Clan History

This name is derived from the Dunlop lands in Cunningham, Ayrshire. From pre-10th century Gaelic, the original meaning was the fort (dun) at a muddy place (Lapach). The Dunlops have lived in this area since the 13th century.

The name was pronounced similarly to Dulap or Delap. It was also spelled this way at times. Neel Fitz Robert de Dullope in 1296 is an example of this pronunciation being written down as it was pronounced. This translates as Neil, the son of (Fitz) Robert of Dunlop, who paid homage to the Scottish revolutionary government that year. Later that year, as Nel de Dunlopp, he appeared as a witness at an inquest into the ownership of lands in Berwick. He was most likely the first holder of Dunlop's ancient coat of arms, which featured a red two-headed eagle on a (silver) white field.

Constantine Dunlop of that Ilk is mentioned in the Buccleuch Manuscripts of 1496, as is William Dunlop the Elder, who is said to have emigrated to Carolina in 1680 before returning to Scotland to become Principal of Glasgow University in 1690. He died at the age of fifty-one in 1700. The first recorded spelling of the family name is that of Dom Gullelmus de Dunlop, a charter witness at the town of Irvine, Scotland, during King Alexander III of Scotland's (1249 - 1286) reign - main image.

The name is now very popular in the United States and Canada, though the spelling has nearly reverted to the original dialect of the Middle Ages, with variations such as Dalape, Dunlap, or Dunlape.
