Grant Clan History

After the Normans established themselves in England, the name Grant became common, appearing in many documents from various areas that have survived to the present day. The word has similar meanings in French and Gaelic, which are big and more.

However, the earliest recorded Grants in Scotland date from the mid-thirteenth century and describe the acquisition of Stratherrick land through the marriage of a Grant to Sir John Bisset's daughter Mary. Sir Laurence le Grand, one of their two children, rose to become Sheriff of Inverness.

The family backed Robert the Bruce in his quest for the Scottish throne.

Randolph and John de Grant were defeated and imprisoned for a time at the Battle of Dunbar in 1296.

The Grants continued to acquire lands in Glen Urquhart and Glenmoriston, and with Bruce's victory came rewards and endorsement of Strathspey property, establishing the Grants as a key Highland power.

When Sir John Grant married Maud, the daughter of Gilbert of Glencairnie, the Grants gained even more power. Maud was the heiress of the ancient Celtic Stathearn dynasty's cadet branch, an Earldom older than written records. Their eldest son founded the Grants of Freuchie, while a younger son founded the Tullochgorm branch.

Grant Places & People

Clan Grant Individuals

Sir Archibald Grant of Monymusk (1696-1778)

Despite being expelled from Parliament for fraud and having deep ties to the York Buildings Company, Sir Archibald is highly regarded for introducing new agricultural methods to Scotland from south of the border, which changed the landscape.

On his Monymusk lands, he cleared the fields of stones, which were then used to construct dry stone dykes, started crop rotation, planted fodder crops, and planted five million trees. His increased yields earned him the trust of his skeptic tenants and other landowners.

Grant, Anne

Laggan's Anne Grant (1755-1838)

Despite being born in Glasgow, Anne spent her childhood in America, where her father was stationed. Her marriage in 1779 produced eight children, and when her husband died in 1801 she turned to writing to supplement her income.

Her first collection of poems was published in 1802, and her best work, "Letters from the Mountains," was published the following year. Her abilities earned her the support of Sir Walter Scott, who introduced her to Edinburgh's literary circles.

"Memoirs of an American Lady" came out in 1808, and "Superstitions of the Highlands" came out in 1811.

Sir Alexander Grant (1864-1937)

The man who made McVities a household name in baking was born in Forres, the son of a railway guard. Before working for Robert McVitie in Edinburgh, he was a baker's apprentice. McVitie & Price was expanding into new Edinburgh and London locations, and Grant was appointed manager of the former.

By 1910, he was managing director, and he shaped the company to meet the growing tastes of the public. Grant, as a philanthropist, contributed £100.95,000 to the establishment of the National Library of Scotland.

A word about Coats of Arms:

A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist.
