10 things Only Scottish people do at Christmas - ScotsTee Shop

By ScotsTee Shop

Christmas customs, eh? Some of them are known all over the world. Santa Claus comes down the chimney, a festive film is shown on Christmas Eve, and Rudolph is given a carrot.

However, some things are done differently in Scotland. What is your favorite Christmas tradition?

We asked our Facebook followers what Scottish Christmas traditions they follow every year in order to compile the ultimate list of 10 Scottish Christmas traditions!

Is your custom on the list?

1. Having an orange stuck in your sock

Many of our readers mentioned that their parents would get an extra orange in their sock every year!

2. Excited for Hogmanay!

It is common for Scots to be more excited about Hogmanay and New Year than Christmas - and there is a good reason for this! As one reader pointed out, Christmas Day was not declared a public holiday in Scotland until 1958, so for those born before the 1950s, the tradition was to celebrate Hogmanay, which was a holiday in Scotland.

3. Santa receiving a dram with a shortbread

Mr Claus must have had a sore head when he returned from delivering gifts in Scotland, because according to our readers, they all left him a wee dram and shortbread to enjoy!

4. Annuals for Broons and Oor Wullie

For many people, Christmas isn't complete unless they receive an Oor Wullie or The Broons annual on December 25!

5. The Irn Bru commercial

Forget the Coca-Cola truck; Christmas isn't complete until The Snowman consumes a can of Irn Bru in Scotland.

6. How to Make Ginger Cordial

Many readers attested to making ginger cordial as a key Christmas tradition in Scotland.

7. Sausages that have been kilted

Pigs wrapped in blankets? No! It's time for kilted sausages!

8. Skirlie, here's your turkey!

Skirlie is a great Scottish alternative to stuffing that many families enjoy with their turkey at Christmas.

9. Construct a clootie dumpling.

Another traditional Scottish Christmas dish is clootie dumpling. It's delicious on Burns Night, too, because it's made with dried fruit and spices.

10. Creating a tablet

Making tablet was a key Christmas tradition in many readers' homes, as it is a true Scottish treat all year round.
