Forrester Clan History

The name is derived from the 'forest keeper'.

In 1444, Archebaldus Forestar witnessed a grant to the church of Leshmagow by Gillemor filius Gilleconel, and in 1190, William Forestarius' house was one of the boundaries of the church of Molle's lands.

Marninus Forestarius had lands in Dunipas in 1200, and Robert the forester witnessed a resignation of lands in Annandale in 1245.

In 1296, John le Forester of Berwickshire paid homage, Moris le Forester was a member of the inquisition on Sir John de Calentir's lands in 1303, and William Forrester appears in the muster-roll of the peel of Linlithgow in 1311.

Torwood Castle, near Falkirk, was built for Sir Alexander Forrester around 1566.

The Forrestars of Garden were a prominent family in Stirlingshire, and the name appears in Stirling records, especially between 1360 and 1654. The Lords Forrester owned the lands of Torwood near Falkirk, and Torwood Castle was built for Sir Alexander Forrester in the latter half of the 16th century. The castle was built in the Scottish Baronial style but is now in ruins.

A Forrester family was among the most ancient representatives of the burgher nobility in Edinburgh in the 14th century.

A word about Coats of Arms:

A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist. With the exceptions noted above, the arms depicted below are personal arms. Only the person who has been granted these weapons has the right to use them.
