Paisley Clan History

Paisley is a Scottish name derived from the town of the same name in Renfrewshire.

William Passeleue, or Passelaw, witnessed charters by William the Lion sometime between 1179 and 1190, and as William Passelewe, he witnessed a charter by Alan filius Walteri circa 1202 as William Passelewe.

This William could be the same as William de Passele, who witnessed the donation of Kincardin Church to the Abbey of Cambuskenneth around 1199.

In 1320, the canon of Glasgow, dominus Johannes de Passelet, witnessed the donation of half of Litel Guvan to the Hospital of Polmade.

Henry Paslaye was a burgess freeman of Glasgow in 1600, and John Paislie was made a burgess in Aberdeen in 1616.

During the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, there was a Pasley family in Dumfriesshire, and several of them distinguished themselves in public service.

In 1689, a shoemaker named William Paislaw was recorded in Hawick, and the notorious 'priest' of Gretna Green, Pasley or Paisley, may have derived their name from (How)pasley, which was originally in the barony of Hawick.
