Paterson Clan History

Paterson, or Patterson, is the Scottish equivalent of 'Patrick's son' or 'Patrickson', and it is a very common surname in Scotland.

Clan Pheadirean's (Paterson's) traditional lands were on Loch Fyne's north side, where many people with this name could be found.

Patterdale in Westmoreland (now modern-day Cumbria, north-west England) was once known as Patrickdale, which translates as "the dale or valley of Patrick," and was part of the ancient Scottish kingdom of Strathclyde.

William Patrison and John Patonson were 'gentillmen' witnesses in Aberdeen in 1446.

Donald Patyrson was made burgess of Aberdeen in 1494, and Patrick Patersoune was charged with defrauding the king's customs in 1524.

A Robert Patersoun was recoded in 1544 as the 'captaine of ane were schip of Dundee,' and a John Patersoune reported owning land in Glasgow in 1553.

In 1557, Fyndlay Patersoune obtained a tack of the lands of Owar Elrick from Cupar Abbey.

In 1557, John Patersoun, custumar of Cupar, and David Petirsoun rendered the burgh of Cupar's accounts to the Exchequer.

A John Patersoune was Burgess of Northberwyk (North Berwick) in 1562, and a George was a monk at Culross monastery in Fife in 1569.

James Patirsone, the sheriff-depute of Inverness in 1530, may be the same person as James Patirsoun, the provost of Inverness forty-three years later, in 1573.

Sir William Paterson (April 16, 1658 – January 22, 1719) is one of history's most famous Patersons. Born in Tinwald, Dunfries and Galloway, he was the founder of the Bank of England in 1694, a key figure in the establishment of the Bank of Scotland the following year, and the brains behind the doomed Darien Scheme.

According to one of the Farquharson genealogies, "the Patersons in the North" are descendants of Patrick, Ferquhard's grandson, from whom the Farquharson clan takes their name.

A word about Coats of Arms:

A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist.
