Rose Clan History
The Rose clan descended from the Norman family 'de Ros,' who first settled in the Nairn district in the mid-thirteenth century. Hugo de Ros established his home at Kilravock through marriage to the de Bisset family, which has remained the chief's and family's designation to this day.
Another marriage brought the Roses extensive lands at Strathnairn and an addition to the family coat of arms. Previously, the Rose shield featured water bougets, which were said to represent the water containers carried by knights participating in the Holy Crusades. The Chisholms' boar's head was added to the shield as a result of their alliance.
The Rose family records and charters were destroyed in 1390 when the notorious Wolf of Badenoch burned down Elgin Cathedral, where they were kept. All documents concerning the family's history were destroyed. However, from this point forward, the Roses' records are among the most detailed in Scottish family history.
In comparison to other clans, the Roses of Kilravock were diplomatic in their relations with neighbors and lived peacefully. The Barons of Kilravock intermarried with the first families of the North, and the current Kilravock Castle was built in 1460 on the banks of the River Nairn, where the family still lives today.
The Roses are one of the few families in Scotland whose chiefship has been passed down in an unbroken line to the present day.
