Spottiswood Clan History
The surname Spottiswood, or Spottiswoode, derives from the barony of Spottiswood in the parish of Gordon in Berwickshire.
When Robert de Spotteswode signed the Ragman Roll in 1296, pledging his allegiance to Edward I of England, he became the first person with this surname to be recorded. S' Rob' de Spottiswood is written on his seal as a wild boar passant.
William de Spottiswod, a notary public, certified the proceedings against the Knights Templars in Scotland on December 15, 1309.
Gavin Spottiswood was said to have witnessed a sasine instrument in 1525.
John Spottiswood (1565-1639), archbishop of St. Andrews, wrote A History of the Church and State of Scotland, which was published in 1655.
Alexander Spotswood, a descendant of that ilk, was regarded as one of the most popular and capable representatives of Crown authority to the early American colonies (1710–1722). Alexander was also a major promoter of tobacco cultivation, which helped lay the groundwork for both Virginia's and Glasgow's "Tobacco Lords" fortunes.
Spotswode, Spotswood, and Spottyswod are all variations on the name.
