Taylor Clan History
The surname Taylor, also spelled Tayler and Tayleur, is of occupational origin, deriving from the word 'tailor,' which means a cloth cutter. The term "tailor" derives from the old French word tailler, which means "to cut." In Latin documents, the surname is frequently written as cissor. It's a very common name, especially in early Scots records.
Alexander la Tayllur was a valet to King Alexander III in 1276, and John le Taillur was recorded as holding the mill of Selkirk in 1292.
Brice le Taillur was one of the Scottish prisoners captured at Dunbar Castle in 1296.
By signing the Ragman Roll in 1296, Adam le Taillur of Roxburgh, William le Taillur of Dunfries, William le Taillur of Edinburgh, Adam le Taillur of Lanark, and William le Taillour and David le Taillur, both of Forfar in Angus, all pledged their allegiance to England's Edward I.
In 1376, a John Cissor was a tenant in the barony of Buittle, an Adam Cissor was a tenant in the barony of Newlands, and an Andrew Cissor was a tenant in the village of Preston.
In 1384, Johannes Cissor was excommunicated from the parish of Fyvy.
In 1392, the records show that William Scissor held a tenement in Edinburgh, and David II granted Walter Cissor half of the land of Glorat. Both Donald Scissor and Bricius Scissor were recorded as witnesses in Inverness in 1462, and Arthur Scissor is mentioned in Perth in 1463, the same year as an Arthur Tailzoure. A grave slab discovered in Dundee bears the inscription "hic iacet Joannes filivs Philippi Cissoris," as well as a pair of scissors and a bodkin (a long, thick needle). The Taillear dubh na tuaighe (Black tailor of the battle-axe) is a semi-legendary figure in Cameron family tradition. Other variations of the surname Taylor recorded over the years include: Tailer, Tailleur, Taillor, Tailliour, Tailliovr, Taillur, Taillyer, Taillyeor, Taillzier, Tailyeour, Tailzieor, Talyeor, Talyhour, Talyowr, Talzeor, Talzeour, Talzior, Talzour, Talzoure, Tayliour, Tayllur, Taylyhour, Taylyour, Taylowre, Taylzowr, Telyour, Thailzor, Thalzeour, and Tyllour.
