Which was the most feared Highland clan?

Highland clans' violence reached epic proportions as honour, power, and territory were pursued and defended in equal, and often barbaric, measure.

The territorial warlords fought for their reputation, wealth, and survival against rival clans and a state that was sometimes aided by senior clan figures within its fold.

On one level, the clan system provided kinship and security, but it also included beheadings and mass graves.

But which of the clans was the most feared?

Given shifting loyalties and Scotland's turbulent political and religious landscape, the answer is not easy to come by.

Clan politics, according to John Thor Ewing, a writer and historian who is researching the history of his own clan, have changed "dramatically" over the centuries.

"One of the fascinations of clan history is that each clan has its own history of feuds and alliances, so that one family's trusted friend is often their neighbor's treacherous foe," he continued.

"Then, move forward fifty years, and the situation may be reversed."

According to Sir Malcolm MacGregor of MacGregor, convener of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs, there are several candidates for the title of most feared clan.

Clan Campbell of Breadalbane is ranked first.

The feud between the MacGregors and the Campbells is well known, but Sir Malcolm claimed that this branch of the Campbells was particularly feared due to its dominance over a large swath of Scotland - and its willingness to defend it at any cost.

The Campbells of Breadalbane were described as "particularly violent" by Sir Malcolm.

"The Earl of Breadalbane was incredibly powerful, holding land from coast to coast, from the mouth of the River Tay to the Argyll Coast," he explained.

"He wielded enormous power and was determined to keep that land from the MacGregors and others."

"The clan was extremely feared by people like the MacGregors, and there was a lot of beheading and lynching going on." You don't want to be apprehended by the Campbells of Breadalbane.

"That's not to say the MacGregors didn't give as good as they got. They could also perform beheadings."

On April 7, 1750, Sir Colin Campbell, Earl of Breadalbane, also known as Grey Colin, personally beheaded the Clan Chief of Gregor at Balloch Castle, now the site of Taymouth Castle in Perth and Kinross.

He claimed to have "the power of pit and gallows" - or the inherited right to imprison and execute.

According to Sir Malcolm, the Campbells were "very much encouraged by the king" to eliminate people like the MacGregors over time.

Sir Duncan Campbell of Glen Orchy was knighted in 1590 and was instrumental in the early 1600s in outlawing the MacGregors.

John Campbell, 1st Earl of Breadalbane and Holland, also known as Slippery John, had been involved in Crown negotiations with clan chiefs to accept King William of Orange's rule.

Following the Massacre of Glencoe in 1692, he was charged with high treason for allegedly negotiating a secret deal with Jacobite-supporting clans. The King later released him.

Sir Malcolm stated that "duplicity, double crossing, and theft" were all part of the Highland clan story.

"And the Campbells were very good at it," Sir Malcolm went on to say.

Seafaring clans were also among the most feared of territorial warlords.

Sir Malcolm claimed that the MacDonalds of the Isles were "not to be trifled with."

Clan Gregor once held much of the Breadalbane territory in Argyll, including Kilchurn at Loch Awe, but it was largely seized by the Campbells after Robert the Bruce instituted feudal tenures.

At their peak, this strand of the MacDonalds, described as a band of "independent princes," ruled the Hebrides, Skye and Ross, Knoydart and Ardnarmuchan, as well as pockets of mainland Scotland.

They were once the largest landowners in Scotland.

In 1338, the clan signed a treaty with Edward III of England, with the last leader, John of Islay (1434-1503), becoming involved in a dangerous plot to aid an invasion of mainland Scotland. It was to be the clan's undoing.

The MacNeils of Barra, another seafaring clan, were also a law unto themselves. They were notorious pirates who used their superior knowledge of the sea to survive primarily on the proceeds of their seaborne raids.

MacNeils launched attacks from their base at Kismul Castle in Birlinn vessels that resembled Viking long boats.

Indeed, recent DNA testing on the MacNeils established the clan's Norse ancestry and disproved the long-held theory that the clan descended from an 11th-century Irish prince.

Sir Malcolm stated that the Border clans, such as the Armstrongs and Elliots, should be remembered for their role in fighting the English over the "debatable lands."

Johnnie Armstrong of Gilnockie was once one of the Scottish borders' most popular, powerful, and feared clan chiefs.

He and 30 to 40 of his men were executed in 1530 after being ambushed by James V's army at Carlienrig.

They were on their way to meet the King and thus unarmed when they came across the King's men.

They were all taken out and hanged from the trees before being buried in an unmarked mass grave.

"The King was really as violent as anyone else," Sir Malcolm said.
