Clan Anderson History
The name'son of Andrew' is common in Scotland in various forms. In the Highlands, it was spelled MacAndrew, while in the Lowlands, it was spelled Anderson. They both derive from the Gaelic word 'Gilleaindreas,' which means "servant of St. Andrew," Scotland's patron saint.
Though there is no precise location, the Kinrara manuscript contains details of a claim that the MacAndrews came to Badenoch from Moidart around 1400. The stories of Iain beg MacAindrea's vengeance on cattle lifters who raided Badenoch may confirm this. However, there is no denying the intellectual pedigree established by his kin folk.
The tradition of scholarly erudition has deep roots in Anderson clan history, spanning all disciplines. Alexander Anderson, who published works on geometry and algebra in Paris between 1612 and 1619, started this tradition. David Anderson of Finshaugh, his cousin, possessed a similar skill in mechanics and mathematics, which he used to remove a large rock that had obstructed the entrance to Aberdeen harbour.
This accomplishment earned him the moniker 'Davie-Do-a-Things.'
