Clan Adam History
The name Adam was popular in England in the 14th century, and it was also found in Scotland at the time, though the first mention is to Adam, sub-prior of Melrose (photograph of Melrose Abbey, 1844, above), who became abbot of Cupar in 1196.
Adam's son was one of the witnesses to William Bruce's charter of the lands of Kynemund to Adam of Carlyle (1194-1214). In 1201, an Adam became abbot of Newbattle, and another Adam from Lennox was a holy monk.
Andrew Adam was one of Lanark's representatives in the burghs' obligation to pay a portion of King James I's ransom.
Many consider Robert Adam (1728-1792) to be the greatest architect of the late 18th century. Below is an example of his work.
William Adam (1751-1839) was a Scottish Member of Parliament (MP) and later a judge in the British Parliament.
Clan Adam Places & People
Mr. Robert Adam (3 July 1728 – 3 March 1792)
Robert Adam, born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, was a neoclassical architect, interior designer, and furniture designer who created many famous homes and structures such as Pulteney Bridge in Bath, Syon House in London, Charlotte Square in Edinburgh, and Culzean Castle in Ayrshire, the former seat of the Kennedy clan.
Clan Adam Tartans
Although an Adam tartan exists, it is not woven as a stock tartan in any Scottish mill. Adam is a sept of Clan Gordon and thus would dress in the Gordon tartans.
The Gordon tartan is similar to the Black Watch and Campbell tartans, but with a yellow line.

A word about Coats of Arms:
A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). There are no such things as "family coats of arms." Personal weapons are depicted below (with the above exceptions). Only the person who has been granted these weapons has the right to use them.

The motto is VIRTUS VERITAS.
Granted: 14th October 1987, Lord Lyon's Court. Lyon Register, folio 54, volume 71. My father, George Gershom Adams, was honored with the arms. "The cross crosslets fitche represent Adams, while the dock leaf and saltire represent Marshall, my father's maternal line." Seton is represented by the three crescents. For at least four generations of the family in Edinburgh, the crest has been used on seals, rings, and silver, but no earlier matriculation exists.
