Clan Aiton History
The name is a variant of Ayton, which derives from the Berwickshire lands of Ayton (the town on the river Eye). Steffan, son of Swan de CEitun, granted the Priory of Coldingham a charter of the lands of Wytefeld in 1170 or so. Dolfinus de eit' and HeI de eitun were witnesses to a charter by Waltheus, earl of Dunbar, in 1166, and Elya de Eytone and Stephen de Eytona were witnesses to a charter by Patrick, 1st earl of Dunbar, in 1166. (1189-99).
Mark of Aytoune, a merchant from Leith (near Edinburgh), had safe passage to England in 1440. In 1527, Andrew Athone was rector of Spot, and in 1549, Andrew Athoun of Dunmur was a witness.
The lands of Ayton passed to George de Home in the fifteenth century and remained in that family until 1716, when they were forfeited for rebellion.
The name Aytoun first appears in Fife in the fourteenth century, when John Aytoun received a charter for the lands of Over Pittadie, and the Aytouns of Inchdairnie are descended from him.
Ayton Castle is located in the Scottish Borders.

He was laid to rest at nearby St. Anne's Church in Kew.

Clan Aiton Tartans
Because the Aiton tartan is not a stock weave, it can only be done as a special weave. If you are interested, please contact us. Because Aiton is a sept of Clan Home, Aitons are permitted to wear these tartans. The Home/Hume tartans are available in a variety of weights.
