Clan Auchinleck History
Auchinleck is also spelled Affleck, Auchinlec, Haghenlek, Aghleke, Achenleck, and Aathelek and derives from the Ayrshire barony of Auchinleck.
The name Auchinleck (pronounced OKH-in-LEK) is most likely derived from the Gaelic Ach, which means an elevation, mound, or round hill that is generally level at the top. The term leac then refers to a flat stone or a tombstone. Cairns, encampments, and Druidical circles can be found in several locations throughout Ayrshire. Auchinleck appears to have been one of the ancient Celts' and Druids' gathering places for conventions, festivals, and acts of worship.
Since 1306 the Auchinleck family has been recorded at Affleck Castle. Affleck Castle, formerly known as Auchinleck Castle, dates from the 14th century. The property was owned by the Auchinlecks until the middle of the 1600s, when it passed to the Reids. The castle is now deserted.
Patrick de Aghleke of Lanarkshire, who also paid homage in 1296, is mentioned again in 1303 as Patrick de Achenlek, juror on inquest at Lanark. He is most likely the same Patrick de Auuynlec who witnessed the lands of Grenrvg being resigned around 1311.
Adam de Aghynlek resigned the lands of 'le Greynryg et de le Tathys' to Kelso Abbey in 1370. In 1464, Andrew Athelek and James Athelek of Scotland petitioned for safe passage through England.
There were also Afflecks in Angus, with John of Aghelek being the first to pay homage in 1306. The Angus Afflecks were the Earls of Crawford's hereditary armour bearers. In 1499, John Athlyk was burgess of Inverness.

Affleck Castle, also known as Auchenleck Castle, was built on the lands of the Auchenlecks of that Ilk in the 1400s. It is an L-shaped tower house in Angus, east Scotland, near Monkie. The castle was held by the Reid family by the mid-18th century, who fortified it as supporters of the 1745 Jacobite rebellion. Affleck Castle was demolished in 1760 to make way for a new mansion, but it still stands today, though unoccupied.
Clan Auchinleck Tartans
Clan Auchinleck has no registered tartan. The Auchinleck family, however, can wear the Lindsay tartan because they are a sept of Clan Lindsay.
