Chalmers Clan History
This name, like Chamberlain, is derived from the French word 'chambre'.
Hugh de Camera appears as a witness to both David I and Malcolm IV charters.
William the Lion's charters were witnessed by Richard de Camera on two occasions.
In 1296, Robert and William de la Chaumbre of Lanarkshire paid homage.
Willmus de Camera served on Aberdeen's common council in 1399, and Alexander Chaumir was elected sarjeant in 1475.
In 1474, Alexander of Chamowr was appointed 'forspekar for the comownis and merchandis' of Aberdeen, and Gilbert de Chamer was elected alderman.
In 1521, Thomas Chamer was burgess of Aberdeen, and in 1555, a plot of land in Glasgow was sold to John Chalmyr.
Chalmers Close, off Edinburgh's High Street, is named after Captain of the Trained Bands Patrick Chalmers, who lived there in 1682.
For over 500 years, the Chalmers held the estate of Gadgirth in Ayr.
Chalmers Tartans
There is no registered clan tartan for Chalmers; however, because they are a sept of Clan Cameron of Erracht, people with the Chalmers surname may wear Cameron tartans.

A word about Coats of Arms:
A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist. With the exceptions noted above, the arms depicted below are personal arms. Only the person who has been granted these weapons has the right to use them.
