Lundin Clan History

According to ancient Lundin charters, the clan's progenitor was Philip, Chamberlain during the reign of King Malcolm IV, who was granted the barony of Lundin in Fife. The clan's name ("de Lundin") derives from these lands. By the 15th century, the barony and name had changed to "Lundy," which became "Lundie" in the 17th century. While the chief and many landed clansmen had reverted to "Lundin" by the 18th century, many more ordinary clansmen retained Lundy or Lundie; thus, all Scots of surnames Lundie, Lundy, or Lundin are members of this clan.

Philip de Lundin's ancestors are unknown. Some 18th century texts claim he is the brother of Thomas, who was granted the barony of Lundie in Angus; however, there is no contemporary evidence to support this claim. In Lundin, Philip was succeeded by his son Walter, who was succeeded by his son Thomas. It has been claimed that a daughter of one of these chiefs married Robert, King William the Lion's illegitimate son (on this basis, a 'new' coat of arms was granted to the Lundin chief in 1669), but there is no evidence for this. From their grant to Philip in 1164 to the death of John Lundie of Lundie in 1647 (who was succeeded by his daughter's husband), the lands of Lundin and chieftainship of this clan passed from father to son.

Following Philip's grant of Lundin, the clan acquired additional baronies and lands through marriage (Conland, Gorthy, Balgony, and Benholm); numerous smaller cadet branches (such as the Lundins of Auchtermairne, Glasswell, Drums, and Strathairlie) were also established. The Lundin lairds held a variety of positions of power and influence, including Lord High Treasurer, Sheriff of Fife, keeper of the Falkirk palace, and governor of Stirling Castle. Records show that the Lundins were also involved in many of Scotland's great wars and battles; indeed, a recently discovered chronicle shows that Sir Richard de Lundy was a co-leader (along with William Wallace) of the early Scottish rebellion against Edward I of England.

While the clan was once powerful, many of its cadets' fortunes declined in the 17th and 18th centuries, and at the same time, the chief of the clan (a Lundin on his mother's side) succeeded to the Earldom of Perth, resumed his paternal surname of Drummond, and sold the barony of Lundin. All of the clan lands had been sold by the mid-nineteenth century.
