Lyle Clan History

A family of Lyles was barons of Duchal in Refrewshire as early as the early 1200s.

Lyle is descended from the Northumberland family of 'de Insula' (as it is in Latin) 'Lisle' (de Lisle, Delisle in French).

The name Ralph de Insula, or Radulphus, first appears in Scotland. As a disciple of the Steward, he witnessed the gift of the church of Innerkyp to the monks of Paisley by Baldwin de Birge, sheriff of Lanharc (Lanark), around 1170. Around the same time, de Insula witnessed Walter Fitz-Alan give ferms of his mill at Paisley for the soul of Sir Robert de Brus.

He saw Walter Hose hand over the church of Cragyn (Craigie in Kyle) to the monks of Paisley sometime before 1177.

In 1296, John del Ille of Berwickshire and Richard del Isle signed the Ragman Roll, pledging allegiance to England's Edward I alongside many of Scotland's nobility.

Sir Robert Lyle was created a Lord by James II (1437-1460), elevating his knighthood to a peerage. In 1472, the second Lord Lyle was appointed ambassador to England. He was also said to have witnessed the assassination of James III (1460-1488) at the Battle of Sauchieburn in 1488. Lord Lyle is said to have been so outraged by his king's regicide that he and other nobles, including the Earl of Lennox, decided to take up arms to avenge James II's alleged murder. However, this failed, and the title of Lord Lyle was revoked the following year.

Hercules Lyle took part in the 1745 rising but was killed in the Battle of Falkirk in 1746.
