Ogilvie Clan History
Gilbert, a descendant of the ancient Earls of Angus, inspired the name Ogilvie. The name Ogilvie is derived from the old English 'ocelfa' or 'high plain'.
The Ogilvie lands are located in Angus, and the Ogilvie family was appointed hereditary sheriffs of Angus in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. The tower of Airlie, the castle of the chief of the Ogilvies, was built in the 15th century. The Campbells destroyed the 'Bonnie Hoose o' Airlie' in 1640, and this tragic incident is described in a period ballad.
The Ogilvie family suffered greatly in the service of the Stewart monarchs, supporting the Jacobite cause and fighting for the Stewarts in both 1715 and 1745. In 1746, an Ogilvie regiment also fought in the Battle of Culloden. Following the defeat, the chief of the Ogilvie clan fled to France and entered royal service.
The title of Earl of Ogilvie had become tainted by this time, and it was not until 1896 that an Act of Parliament restored the earldom to the family.The current chief of the Ogilvie clan is the Queen's Lord Chamberlain.
Royal ties were also strengthened when the chief's brother, Angus Ogilvy, married HRH Princess Alexandra.

At Philiphaugh, James Ogilvie, 2nd Earl of Ogilvie, was taken prisoner. While awaiting execution, he was imprisoned in St. Andrews Castle. On the eve of his execution, he made a daring escape by impersonating his sister, who had come to see him.
Ogilvie, John (1597-1615)
He was a Jesuit priest from Banff who was hanged for defending the papacy's spiritual supremacy. He was canonized in 1976 after being beatified in 1927. He holds the distinction of being Scotland's only officially recognized martyr after the Reformation.
