Hepburn Clan History

Originated in Hepburn, Northumberland, where a family of this name lived from 1271 until the end of the eighteenth century.

Adam de Hepbourne is said to have been taken prisoner by the Earl of March, who later gifted him lands in East Lothian in exchange for saving the earl's life from a savage horse.

The Hepburns were once quite powerful in East Lothian, with Hepburns of Hailes, Waughton, Smeaton, Bolton, Alderston, Bearford, Beanston, Humbie, Keith, Nunraw, and Monkrigg in the 1500s.
