Lamont Clan History

This clan is descended from the original Scots who crossed the sea from Ireland, where their name meant 'lawgiver,' to establish the kingdom of Dalriada. The Comgall kindred is mentioned in the ancient 'Account Of The Men Of Scotland' as one of the three major kindreds. Its territory, Cowal, still known by that name despite once extending to Bute and Arran, had a chief named Fearchar in 1200.

Duncan and Malcolm, his sons, gave lands to the Paisley monks.

The name Lamont was derived from Malcolm's son Ladman. Duncan and Malcolm took up residence in the fortified castles of Toward and Ascog.

The powerful Campbells, the Lamonts' neighbors, had steadily encroached on the Lordship of Cowal, and following Montrose's great victory at Inverlochy in 1645, the Lamonts took advantage of the opportunity and destroyed Campbell territory at Kilmun.

The following year, a powerful Campbell army invaded and took Toward and Ascog. Sir James Lamont surrendered after being promised fair terms for himself and his people. The dishonourable Campbells, on the other hand, slaughtered over 200 Lamont men, women, and children.

One tree is said to have carried 35 bodies on its branches. Thirty-six men were buried alive elsewhere. The two castles were destroyed, and Sir James was imprisoned for five years.

The Lamont Harp is a valuable national heirloom that has survived since 1464. It is the most ancient surviving example of Scotland's first musical instrument. It measures 38 inches by 16 inches and is owned by the Robertsons of Lude in Perthshire.

The last clan lands were sold in 1893, and the current chief of the clan lives in Australia.

Mr. Frederic Lamond

Lamond, Frederic (1868-1948)

Lamond's powerful piano performances of Beethoven's work, taught by Liszt, were his crowning achievements. He spent most of his life in Germany until Hitler's rise forced him to return to Britain. "Aus Dem Schottischen Hochlande" and "Symphony in A, a Cello Sonata" are two of his own compositions.

Donald Lamont (1874-1958)

The Tiree-born Gaelic writer served as minister of Blair Atholl. From 1907 to 1950, he was the editor of the publication 'Life and Work' for its Gaelic supplement, which covered a wide range of issues.

His essays on the fictitious parish of Cille-Sgumain aided in the development of modern, simpler Gaelic prose. Thomas M Murchison edited "Prose Writings of Donald Lamont" and published it in 1960.
