Learmonth Clan History

The surname Learmonth is a territorial one derived from the Learmonth lands in Berwickshire, and it is an old surname in the Merse area. Thomas Learmonth, also known as Thomas the Rhymer, was a supposed prophet and a 13th century Scottish laird from Berwickshire. He rhymed many of his prophecies, including his prediction of Alexander III's death. Thomas' reputation for supernatural abilities was said to rival that of Merlin.

In 1408, a William de Leirmontht served as a juror on an inquisition in Swinton. Andrea de Lermwth is recorded in Edinburgh in 1413, and appears again in 1426 under the surname Lermonth. In 1434, an Alexander Leyremonthe or Leremonthe worked as a clerk of works for the town and castle in Berwick.

Jacobus Lermonth was the Glasgow diocese's local congregation leader and notary public in 1454. The Learmonths established the family's main line by marrying into the Dairsies of Fife. In 1546, Sir James Learmouth of Dairsie was both the provost of St. Andrews and the Master to James V's Household.

Sir James Leirmonth of the Balcomy Leirmonths was appointed in 1604 to consider a possible political union with England. The Balcomy Leirmonths are no longer in existence. A Scottish Learmonth settled in Russia in the 17th century, and Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841), a famous 19th century Russian romantic writer and poet, claimed to be a descendant of this Learmonth. After the death of Alexander Pushkin in 1837, Lermontov was regarded as Russia's most important poet. Lermontov is said to be related to Thomas the Rhymer, but this has never been proven.

In 1791, a poet named John Learmont published Poems in Edinburgh.
