Galloway Clan History

Gallouay, Galoway, Gallaway, Gallway, Gallawaye, and Galloay are all spelling variations of this name.

The family takes its name from the same-named district in southwest Scotland.

In the early 16th century, a family of this name settled in Dunbartonshire, while others can be found on the east coast.

Galloway's inhabitants were most likely descended from Englishmen, and they appear to have sided with the invading Norsemen of the time, rather than their fellow Scots in central and northern Scotland.

In 1230, Thomas de Galwethia, Earl of Atholl, made a gift of lands to the Abbey of Neubotle, and Michael de Galewath was a witness.

In 1405, John Galway was the master of a ship owned by Sir John of Mountgomery.

In 1495, Jhone of Galloway was tenant of a portion of Kethik, and Sande Galowey was convicted of causing a disturbance in Lanark in 1488.

In 1597, John Galloway of Kilmaronok was sued for contempt and defiance, and another Galloway of Kilmaronok joined the MacFarlanes in their feud with the Buchanans.

In 1606 William Galloway, a shoemaker, was elected burgess of Aberdeen.

In 1635, Neill Gallouay was a retainer to John Kennedy, 6th Earl of Cassilis, in Carrick.

Coats of Arms of Galloway

A word about Coats of Arms:

A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist. With the exceptions noted above, the arms depicted below are personal arms. Only the person who has been granted these weapons has the right to use them.
