Garden Clan History

A variant spelling of the name Gardyne, derived from the barony of Gardyne in the parish of Kirkden, Angus. The name is common in Arbroath and the surrounding area, and people with this name have long held land in Aberdeen, Banff, and Perth.

In 1296, Gardyn of Edinburghshire paid homage.

In 1450, Patrick Gardyne de eodem appears as a witness.

In 1574, Maister Gilbert Gardin served as minister at Fordice.

Garn, Gardin, Dalgarn, and Jardine are all variations of the name. A long-running feud between the Gardynes and the Guthries resulted in the deaths of several family members on both sides. Some of the deaths have resulted in contradictory versions of events from the two families, particularly in the case of William Guthrie's murder of Patrick Gardyne of that Ilk in 1578. However, the Guthries proved to be the more powerful of the two, and the 10th Laird, David Gardyne, sold up and abandoned the Gardyne land and castle.

Coats of Arms for Gardens

A word about Coats of Arms:

A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist. With the exceptions noted above, the arms depicted below are personal arms. Only the person who has been granted these weapons has the right to use them.
