Kinnimont Clan History

The name Kinninmont is of regional origin, deriving from the lands of Kinninmonth in Fife. Between 1189 and 1199, William I of Scotland (top) granted Odo, a seneschal to the Bishop of St. Andrews, a charter for those lands.

According to an 1841 publication, the family name appears for the first time on the original charter in the form of S'Iohannis de Kinimmund.

William de Kynemuthe's name appears on the 1296 Ragman Roll, along with the names of many other Scottish nobles declaring allegiance to Edward I of England.

In 1329, an Alexander de Kininmund became Bishop of Aberdeen, and in 1352, a different Alexander de Kininmund became Archdeacon of Aberdeen before becoming Bishop of Aberdeen in either late 1354 or early 1355.

The chief line ended with the sole heiress marrying Murray of Melgund, as there were no male heirs left to carry on the direct line of Kininmonts of that Ilk.

Sir William Kinninmonth (1904-1988), a well-known Scottish architect, was a more recent notable Kinninmont.

A word about Coats of Arms:

A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist. With the exceptions noted above, the arms depicted below are personal arms. Only the person who has been granted these weapons has the right to use them.
