Hutton Clan History

The name is common in Dunblane, and the 'de Hotons' were an old Cumberland family. In 1263, Symon de Hoton served as a juror on an inquest held before the sheriff of Lanark. In 1460, John Hudton was the abbot of Cupar. In 1621, Thomas Huttoun was returned heir in lands in the parish of Kellis, in 1649, Patrick Huttoune was burgess of Dundee, and in 1654, Christian Huittoun was returned heir of her brother, Hendrie Huitoune, portioner of Newbiggings.

James Hutton, considered by some to be the father of modern geology, was born in Edinburgh in 1726 and died in 1797. He was also a physician, chemist, and experimental farmer. In his honor, a section of Holyrood Park is named Hutton's Section.
