Herries Clan History
This was most likely a branch of the Anglo-Norman family of Heriz from Nottinghamshire who came to Scotland with David I. However, there is another theory about the origin of the name. The Count of Vendome, a French nobleman, visited Britain at one point, and his coat of arms depicts three hedgehogs, suggesting that the surname Herries may derive from the French word for hedgehog, hérisson. The appearance of William de Heriz in numerous charters created by Earl Henry, David I, William the Lion, Walter the Steward, and others dating from the 12th century is thought to support the former theory.
Another William de Heriz, along with many other Scottish nobility, signed the Ragman Rolls in 1296, swearing allegiance to England and Edward I. Galloway has been associated with the leading family of this name since the mid 14th century. Robert I gave Richard Hereis the lands of Elstanefurd in Edinburgh as a gift. In 1464, David de Herice de Dery, Donald Herris, and Donald Heriss of St. Andrews diocese witnessed a confirmation charter of the Mill of Conweth.
Sir Herbert Herries, a descendant of the original Herries, took the title 'Lord Herries' and became a parliamentary Lord in 1489. His son Andrew fought and died at the Battle of Flodden in 1513. William, the third Lord Herries, died without a male heir, leaving only a daughter, and so the title continued, destined to general heirs and allowed to succeed through female heirs. William's daughter married Sir John Maxwell, son of Lord Maxwell, and the Maxwells adopted the Herries arms in 1667.
