Horsburgh Clan History

The origins of this name can be traced back to the same-named land in the parish of Innerleithen in Peeblesshire. The name was first recorded in the reign of Alexander II, when Symon de Horsbroc witnessed a charter granted to the monks of Melrose by William Purveys of Mospennoc.

William de Horsebroch is mentioned in 1283, and he is most likely the same William who was a notary public in the diocese of Glasgow in 1287.

Simon de Horsbrok joined Edward I's foreign service in 1297 and had his lands restored the following year. Alexander Horsbruik of that Ilk was recorded in 1479, and another Alexander Horsbruik was served as heir to his father, John Horsbruik, in the Horsbruik lands and mill (1550). Lady Horsburgh of Horsburgh was the last Horsburgh to hold the barony, which passed to the Chinnery family upon her marriage.

The name is common in Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders.
