Houston Clan History

The name comes from the Houston barony in Lanarkshire.

The surname Paduinan was derived from a place name in Lanarkshire. During Malcolm IV's reign, Hugh de Paduinan received the lands of Kilpeter from Baldwin de Bigre. Hugh's grandson (also Hugh) referred to the land as the barony of Houston, or Hugh's Town. With the signing of the Ragman Rolls in 1296, Fynlawe de Hustone, knight of Lanarkshire, along with a number of other Scottish nobility, paid homage to Edward I of England.

During the Anglo-Scottish Wars of the 16th century, Sir Peter Huston fought alongside Matthew Stewart, the 2nd Earl of Lennox, at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, where both men died. Sir Patrick, Sir Peter's son, was the Keeper of the Quarter Seal and a companion to James V, but the two plotted against their king with Lord Lennox. He was eventually killed at the Battle of Linlithgow Bridge in 1526, which also saw James Hamilton of Finnart capture and murder Lennox.

According to 'Surnames of Scotland' by George Black, people of this name in the Canisbay district are descended from Rev. Andrew Ogstoun of Canisbay, Caithness, whereas the Houstons of Ross-shire are thought to be descended from Rev. Thomas Houston of Inverness (died 1605).

The sons of the fifth Huston Baronet had done much to increase the family's colonial estates, and it was said that when the American colonies gained independence from Great Britain, they owned over 8000 slaves. This line of Hustons went on to reject their Scottish titles in favor of American wealth.

General Sam Houston, a prominent figure in the fight for Texas independence from Mexico, was a descendant of these Hustons. He went on to become the first President of the Republic of Texas, as well as the Senator for Texas when the state agreed to join the Union in 1845.
