Home / Hume Clan History

Hume and Home are both members of the same enormously powerful borders family. Cospatrick, Earl of Dunbar, was descended from the Saxon Princes of Northumberland, and his second son, Patrick, is thought to have started the family. Around 1172, his descendant Aldan was the first to be recorded as having taken the name Home, Berwickshire, to become Aldan de Home.

By 1266, William de Home is listed as a land grantee at Coldstream Monastery. Geoffrey de Home's name appears on the Ragman Roll, submitting to Edward I of England. Sir Thomas, Geoffrey's son, married the heiress of the Pepdie estate of Dunglass.

Sir Alexander, the first Lord Home, was created in 1473 and died in 1491. During his lifetime, he founded the Dunglass collegiate church, served as an ambassador to England, and was among those who had James III's blood on their hands in 1488.

Despite leading the vanguard of Scots knights at Flodden Field, Alexander, the 3rd Lord Home, was found guilty of treason against the Regent Albany by conspiring with the English. He and his brother had their heads displayed on spikes at Edinburgh's Tollbooth.

Many families' allegiances swayed in the turbulent political winds during the reign of Mary, Queen of Scots. The 5th Lord Home supported the Reformation in 1560. Later, he supported Mary and Bothwell's marriage. He led his men against her at the Battle of Langside and aided her imprisonment in Lochleven.

He was charged with treason against James VI in 1573 and spent the rest of his life imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle. His son, on the other hand, remained a staunch supporter of James VI throughout his life, accompanying him on the journey to claim the throne of the new Kingdom. In 1605, his devotion earned him the title Earl of Home.

The 7th Earl supported the Jacobite rising of 1715 and was imprisoned in Edinburgh Castle. The 8th Earl, on the other hand, supported the government during the second rising in 1745. He rose through the ranks to the position of Lieutenant General and Governor of Gibraltar.

Recently, the 14th Earl had to renounce his hereditary peerage in order to become Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Sir Alec Douglas Home passed away in October of 1995.

Lord Kames Henry Home (1696-1782)

In 1736, as an advocate, Henry Home defended Captain Porteous after he ordered his men to open fire on an Edinburgh crowd. When he was appointed as a judge in 1752, he became Lord Kames. Kames is in Berwickshire, near Eccles.

The forfeiture of estates from those involved was part of the punishment for the '45. Lord Kames became involved in estate management and served on the Board of Trustees for the Encouragement of Scotland's Fisheries, Arts, and Manufactures.

His contribution to philosophy was more important than his legal and agricultural work. Home was a key figure in the Scottish Enlightenment and the founding member of the Edinburgh Philosophical Society. David Hume, Adam Smith, and James Boswell were all influenced by his writing.

David Hume (May 7, 1711 – August 25, 1776)

Philosopher, historian, and economist from Scotland.

Home, John (1722-1808).

Home, who was born in Leith, attended the University of Edinburgh and was briefly imprisoned by the Jacobites after being captured at the Battle of Falkirk. He was already a Presbyterian, and after his release, he was appointed Minister of Athelstaneford in East Lothian.

He wrote verse tragedies, beginning with the unsuccessful "Agis" and continuing with the "Douglas," which was performed in Edinburgh beginning in 1756. The Kirk disapproved of the plays and initiated legal action against him.

When "Douglas" became a Covent Garden success in 1757, prompting a patriot in the audience to yell, 'Whaur's yer Wully Shakespeare noo?', Home resigned from the ministry. His later work was neither written for nor successful for Scottish audiences, despite his appointment as tutor to the Prince of Wales.

Alec Douglas-Home (July 2, 1903 – October 9, 1995)

Prime Minister from 1963 to 1964, politician from 1931 to 1974, and Clan Home chief.
