Heron Clan History
The family claims descent from the Herons of Chipchase, who are mentioned in the 11th century in Northumberland.
Between 1178 and 1180, Walterus de Hayroun served as William the Lion's clerk.
Roger Heron, who was a charter witness in 1321, appears as Roger Hayron in a writ by Roger Corbet of Langton in 1330, and Thomas de Heron, knight, was a witness to a demise by Roger Corbet of Langton in 1329.
In 1526, David Herroun was elected sargeant of Aberdeen, and John Herrowne was already burgess.
The Herons were one of many Borders riding clans that James VI pacified in the decade following his accession to the English throne in 1603.
The family's lands of Kerroughtree in Kirkcudbrightshire were consolidated into the barony of Heron around 1688.
A In 1764, Robert Heron was born in New Galloway. From 1780, he studied at Edinburgh University, supporting himself by teaching and translating French. He struggled to live within his means and ended up in debtors' prison in 1791, where he began writing 'A History of Scotland'. He finished the history in six volumes when he was released from prison in 1793. Robert Heron died in poverty at the age of 42 in 1807.
