Maule Clan History
The Maules were descended from a family of de Maules who owned land in France's Seine-et-Oise region. Since the Norman invasion of 1066, Pierre de Maule has been associated with in particular.
Robert de Maule appears to have been the first person with this surname to be recorded in Scotland, and he most likely arrived at the same time as David I's return to Scotland after fighting in England.
Robert appears as a witness in a charter granted to Eustace Fitzjohn by Henry, Earl of Northumberland, the son of David I. He appears to have had lands in the Lothians and may have named Maudslie in Temple parish after himself.
William de Maule, Robert's son, fought at the Battle of Standard in 1138, where the Scots led by David I were defeated by William of Aumale's English army. William, on the other hand, was rewarded with the lands of Easter Fowlis in Perthshire.
Around 1140, William witnessed the confirmation of a charter from Henry, Earl of Northumberland to the church of St. Mary of Haddington for the lands of Clerchetune, now Clerkington. De Maule also had land grants from Malcolm IV in Selkirk and Clackmannan.
Through his marriage to Christina de Valoniis before 1215, Peter de Maule obtained the large baronies of Panmure and Bervie.
Sir William de Maule pledged his allegiance to England's Edward I in St. Andrews in 1291.
Sir Michael de Mauwel, a monk of Aberbrothok in 1361, is another recorded Maule. In 1600, Thomas Mauld was the maister of Elgin Grammar School, and in 1756, James Maule was the factor to James Stuart, the 8th Earl of Moray. Mel, a member of this family, entered the Swedish service in 1654.
