Moubray Clan History

Moubray, also spelled Mowbray and Mobray, is a Norman surname derived from the ancient barony of Mombray in Calvados, on France's northern coast.

The first person with this surname to be recorded in Scotland is Robert de Moubray, who was present at the gift of Staplegortoun to Kelso Abbey, most likely during the reign of Malcolm IV. Philip de Moubray, who sat in the curia regis in 1208, is thought to be Robert's son.

Philip de Mubraj (j = i) appeared as a witness to a charter of the church of Boeltun before the beginning of the thirteenth century, and he also witnessed charters by William the Lion around the same time. Between 1204 and 1214, Philip de Mubraj witnessed two charters in favor of the Abbey of Arbroath by Roger de St. Michaele and Umfridus de Berkelay, as well as a charter by William the Lion to Galfrid, the steward of Kingorn.

Between 1202 and 1214, Philip and his wife Galiena gave the church of Muirkethin to the monks of Dunfermline. He also witnessed King William's grant of right of fair and his "firm peace" to the bishop of Glasgow around 1211, and Philip was a witness to the grant of Lympetlaw to the Hospital of Soltre between 1221 and 1231.

Roger de Mubray was sheriff of Edinburgh, Linlithgow, and Haddington in 1225, and he also served on council.

In 1490, Andrew and William Mobrey were merchants in Edinburgh.

The Estates of Parliament granted Robert Bertoun of Overbertoun the right to "be callit moubray and haue and bier that surem" through his marriage to the daughter and heiress of John Mowbray in 1528.
