MacArthur Clan History

King Arthur legends are well known and historically contradictory. The earliest surviving Scottish poem, from the Welsh-speaking areas of Strathclyde (in which Glasgow now lies), Rheged, and Gododdin (in which Edinburgh now lies), tells of the resistance leader Arthur fighting against the English of Northumbria when they defeated Gododdin. When the Welsh-speaking Kingdoms of Scotland were destroyed, the language returned to Wales and Cornwall.

Arthurian legend was transported with it and spread throughout these areas. Arthur's Seat, on the other hand, remains firmly adjacent to Edinburgh. So old is the name that an ancient Celtic couplet ran, "the hills and streams and MacAlpine, but whence came forth MacArthur?"

The MacArthurs fought alongside Robert the Bruce for Scotland's independence and received mid-Argyll lands as a reward from the King's opponents. The MacArthurs prospered and spread from here, eventually becoming two successful families: the MacArthurs of Loch Awe and the MacArthur Campbells of Strachur.

A MacArthur married the heiress of Duncan mac Duibhne in the thirteenth century.

Later, the Clanh Ua Duihne was known as Cam beul. So the Campbells came through the MacArthurs.

When James I returned from his imprisonment in England, he was furious at the MacArthurs and others. The MacArthurs were stifled by a wave of executions and estate seizures, and the Campbells became the dominant race north of Glasgow.

In 1567, the Loch Awe family's Duncan MacArthur and his son became victims of their own success when jealousy drove neighbors to drown them in the loch.

In the years following the disastrous Battle of Culloden in 1746, a large number of MacArthurs emigrated from Scotland, settling in America, Canada, Australia, and the West Indies.

Arthur, King of the Britons

King Arthur, his knights, and his adventures, the greatest of Ancient Britain's legends, have been located in many different parts of Welsh-speaking Britain. The surviving old Scottish poem, however, depicts Arthur fighting for Gododdin (where Edinburgh now stands) against the invading Northumbrian English. Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh was named after him.

MacArthur, John (circa 1800)

Born in Devon, England, John MacArthur moved to New South Wales with his regiment in 1790 and served as Commandant of Parramatta for nine years beginning in 1973.

His sheep breeding experiments, in which he crossed Irish sheep with Bengal sheep in 1794, followed by the introduction of Merino sheep from South Africa, marked the beginning of Australia's massive wool industry. After studying the vine with his sons across Europe, he planted Australia's first vineyard in 1817, launching another massive antipodean industry.

General Douglas MacArthur

General Douglas MacArthur (1880-1964).

Douglas MacArthur, the son of Lieutenant General Arthur MacArthur, who emigrated from Strathclyde to America, became the twentieth century's best known bearer of the name when he successfully commanded in the Pacific Theatre of the Second World War.

MacArthur, Alexander (1801–47).

Co-author of the influential novel "No Mean City," set in his hometown of Glasgow. The book depicts the city as a brutal urban misery, offering only poverty, drunks, and razor-gangs, and has sold over a million copies, spreading this image around the world.

MacArthur died as a destitute on the banks of the Clyde, drunk on disinfectant.
