Mackie Clan History
The name Mackie is derived from the Gaelic name MacAodha, which means "son of Aodh," a given name that means "fire."
The name is centuries old, especially in the Stirling area, where it can be traced back to the 15th century. In 1491, a William Makke was a charter witness in a Scone charter.
During the sixteenth and first half of the seventeenth centuries, the family was also a prominent clan in Galloway. They were staunch Covenanter supporters. The Mackies of Larg were the clan's main family, and Sir Patrick Mackie of Larg was one of the first fifty Scottish undertakers of the Ulster plantation. However, John, Earl of Annandale later took over around 1,000 acres of Mackie's land near Donegal.
The lands of Bargaly in Kirkcudbrightshire and Auchencairn near Castle Douglas were later acquired by the Mackies of Larg.
Two ravens are skewered together by an arrow on the Mackie of Larg family's arms. It is said that Mackie of Larg, a skilled archer, once accompanied King Robert II. The king wanted to see Mackie's skill, so he pointed to two ravens sitting in a nearby tree and told Mackie to hit them both. Mackie accepted the challenge, confident in his abilities. He took precise aim and killed the two birds with only one of his arrows.
Since then, the Mackie of Larg family's coat of arms has featured two ravens with a lion above, representing the king as a witness to the feat.
Mackies can still be found all over Scotland.
