McCulloch Clan History
The origins of the name McCulloch are largely unknown. The name has traditionally been associated with Galloway, but their origin has been described as "ultra memoriam hominum" in one of their charters. The name could be derived from the Gaelic Mac Cullaich or Mac C(h)ullach, which means "son of (the) boar."
The name first appears in 1296, when Thomas Maculagh del counte de Wyggetone paid homage to Edward I of England. In 1296, Thomas and his brother Michal serve as jurors on an inquest in Berwick. This Thomas is most likely the same as the Thomas Makhulagh who served as sheriff of Wigtown in 1305.
Sir Patrick Macologhe was forced to pay a 100-mark annuity in 1360 "in recompense of his sufferings, and loss of his lands in Scotland for his allegiance" to King Edward III of England.
Other McCullochs or McCullochs with a variant of the name who were recorded include a Helise Makcoulach who married in 1478, as well as a Patrick Makcowloch who was a presbyter and notary of Candidecase in 1480, who may be the same Patrick Mackulloch who was a vicar in Arbroath in 1482.
In August 1643, there was also a David M'Ulloch of Gutters who served on the Committee of War.
Following the Earls of Ross were the Maccullochs of Tarrel, Plaids, Kindeace, and Glastulich.

McCulloch Tartans
McCulloch possesses two tartans.
MacCullough is the same as Lord of the Isles MacDonald. It is unknown when it acquired the additional name, but it is believed to have occurred in the 1930s. For archiving, a date of 1930 was assigned.
In the 1950s, another tartan, MacCullough, was also used. This was designed and woven at the DC Dalgleish mill.
Tartan McCulloch (same as MacDonald Lord of the Isles Red).
McCulloch Tartan - This weave is not in stock at any of the mills and must be ordered as a special order.
