MacNeil of Colonsay Clan History
The name MacNeill, like the Lamont, MacLachlan, and MacSween clans, is said to be descended from Niall of the Nine Hostages, Ireland's first historical high king who reigned in the fifth century.
Anrothan, son of Kin Aodh O'Neill, married a princess of Dalriada in the eleventh century, and the house of Torquil of Taynish arose from this union. Torquil MacNeill of Gigha was described as the clan's chief in 1530, but when Gigha passed to the Campbells, Colonsay became the seat of the chiefs, with the brothers Neill MacNeill and John Og MacNeill attempting to restore the house's fortunes.
However, as the power of the mighty Campbells grew, so did the effectiveness of the house of Colonsay, and the clan's chiefship passed from Colonsay to Barra. Donald MacNeill of Colonsay repurchased Gigha in 1780, ushering in a period of island prosperity. Donald was a wise chief, introducing a successful new pattern of crofting while also constructing new houses for the crofters, many with chimney stacks!
Alexander, Donald's son, sold the island to his brother Duncan, the celebrated Lord Justice-General and Lord Colonsay in 1867. The current chief of the MacNeill of Colonsay clan lives in New Zealand.
