MacQueen Clan History
The MacSween clan claims kinship with the Irish high kings, descended from the Gaelic 'Mac Shuibhe' or'son of Sweyn'.
A number of MacQueens are said to have served as escorts at the marriage of clan Ranald's daughter and clan MacKintosh's chief. Following the union, many of them chose to settle in the Findhorn valley rather than return to their homelands. This branch of the family, known as clan Revan, became a part of the great federation of clans known as Clan Chattan, and by the sixteenth century, they held the lands of Corrybrough. They rose to prominence as a prominent and influential family in the district.
The MacQueen clansmen are also numerous on the islands of Skye and Lewis, and another branch of the family owned lands in Argyllshire at Castle Sween.
The Hebridean branch of the MacQueens has long had a reputation for being excellent fishermen, and they can also boast of having the Rev. Donald MacQueen as a kinsman. He was a minister on Skye in the eighteenth century and was known as "the most intelligent man in Skye." His kinsmen looked up to him, and he won the admiration of Dr. Samuel Johnson, who met him on his famous tour of the Western Isles.
The MacQueen clan's fortunes declined after the eighteenth century, and the chiefs are thought to have emigrated to New Zealand. The family is now widely dispersed throughout Scotland and much of the English-speaking world, and the clan's chiefship is not yet established.
