Clan Belshes History

The clan takes its name from the barony of the same name near Jedburgh, Roxburghshire, which belonged to the Jedburgh monks. Belasis was the original name of the Barony. Richard de Belchis' seal was attached to his homage of 1296.

Alexander Belchis was bailie of Edinburgh in 1530. In 1627, John Belcheis was appointed as commissioner for the Tweed fisheries dispute, and in 1631, Alexander Belchellis of Tofts was made a gratis burgess of Glasgow.

In 1634, Alexander Belseis of Tofts was appointed as Justice of the Peace for Berwickshire.

Alexander Belches was appointed to the Committee of Provisions for the Army in 1651.

The hereditary line ended in 1712, when John Belshes of that Ilk died, leaving four daughters.

Clan Belshes Places & People

People of Clan Belshes

4th Baronet Sir John Stuart (1752-1821)

His original surname was Wish-art-Belches, and he served as MP for Kincardineshire between 1797 and 1806.

After the death of his great-uncle, Sir William Stuart, 2nd Baronet, in 1777, he became Baronet and took the surname Stuart rather than Wishart Belches.

In 1775, he married Lady Jane Leslie, the eldest daughter of David Melville, 6th Earl of Leven, and in 1807, he was appointed baron of the Exchequer in Scotland.

After his death, the Wishart baronetcy of Clifton Hall, Edinburgh, lapsed.

Clan Belshes Locations

Invermay Old House in Perth and Kinross was possibly built in the 17th century, but it could have been built earlier. Above a window (which has since been bricked up), there is a stone with the date 1633 carved on it; however, this date could refer to the year restoration work was completed. The now-ruined house was once a Belshes stronghold and was abandoned between 1770 and 1780.

Clan Belshes Tartans

There is no registered Belshes tartan, so the commonly used tartan by the clan is Roxburgh District, referring to the area most closely associated with the name.

A word about Coats of Arms:

A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist. With the exceptions noted above, the arms depicted below are personal arms. Only the person who has been granted these weapons has the right to use them.
