Clan Blackstock History
The Blackstocks are a Scottish family whose Chief was officially recognized around 1565, when his Arms "Blackstock of that ilk" appeared in one of the Lyon Court heraldic manuscripts, the Workmans Manuscript, with the Arms blazoned "Argent, three trunks of trees, coupled under and above sable."
The name derives from an unknown location, but many members of the family lived in the Dumfries area, joining the Maxwells in 1570 when John Blakstok signed the Band of Dumfries.
In 1517, William Blackstok witnessed a notarial instrument, and in 1524, William Blackstock (the same? ), was appointed clerk of court.
John Blackstock had a tenement in Edinburgh in 1549, and Agnes Blackstock had a tenement in the same city 150 years later.
In 1659, James Blackstock was a tenant of Andrew Hay of Craignethan, in 1641, John Blackstock was a merchant in Dumfries, in 1673, Robert Blackstock was a tenant in the barony of Mousewall, and in 1689, John Blackstocks was a burgess of Peebles.
In 1712, David Blackstocks was appointed constable in Littleclyde, in 1767, William Blackstock was a tanner in Minigaff, and in 1738, Robert Blackstock was a shoemaker in Dumfries.
The Commissariot Record of Dumfries contains nine more instances of the name.
According to Gilbert Burns, the heroine of his brother Robert Burns' poem 'O Poortith Cauld' was Miss Jane Blackstock.
