Clan Blyth History
Blythe is another spelling, named after the barony of Blyth in the lordship of Lauderdale. The name is still used for a farm.
In 1296, William de Blyth of Chirneside, Berwickshire, paid homage, and in 1302, the seal of Adam de Blyth was affixed to an account of goods purchased in Perth.
In 1485, James Blyth was elected burgess of Dundee, and in 1488, William Blitht was elected burgess of Aberdeen.
In 1567, Richard Blyth represented Dundee in Parliament; in 1563, Cuthbert Blyth was burgess of Edinburgh; in 1646, Robert Blyth was retoured heir in the land of Brounslope, Berwickshire; and in 1691, Archibald Blyth is recorded as Baxter in Dysart.
Blyth was a popular name among Border gypsies, one of whom was Esther Faa Blyth, who died in 1883.
Clan Blyth Places & People
Blyth, Benjamin Hall (1819-1866)
Blyth was born in Edinburgh, the son of an iron merchant; his two older brothers died as children. He trained as a railway engineer before opening his own practice on George Street in 1848. B&E Blyth has been here for 100 years. The company was hired to work on many of the new rail systems being built throughout Scotland.
Blyth died at home in North Berwick in 1866 from diabetes exacerbated by overwork and is buried in the Grange Cemetery (grave pictured above).
Blyth and Blyth is still in business today, and his offices were the headquarters of Scottish Natural Heritage for over 50 years.
Clan Blyth Tartans
There is no registered Blyth tartan; however, the clan may wear the Tweedside District tartan, which represents the area from which the name derives.

Coat of Arms of Clan Blyth
A word about Coats of Arms:
A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist. With the exceptions noted above, the arms depicted below are personal arms. Only the person who has been granted these weapons has the right to use them.
William Blythe's Arms
Bishops House has three coats of arms, but none of them are directly related to the occupants. The coat of arms of Blythe can be seen on the Blythe monument at St James Church Norton.
