Clan Buchan History
The name of this clan derives from the Buchan region in north-eastern Aberdeenshire, bordering Banffshire. The Earldom of Buchan was held by the Comyns, but it was lost to them after their defeat at the hands of Robert the Bruce. Subsequently, the earldom was conferred upon Alexander Stewart, natural son of Robert II, and the notorious 'Wolf of Badenoch'.
It is important to note, however, that the name would have also been used by local nobility, even if they had no direct relationship with their Earls.
Auchmacoy came under the family's control in the early 14th century, but it wasn't until 1503 that Andrew, the second chief, received a charter from James IV. Throughout the 17th century, the Barons of Auchmacoy were staunch Royalists who supported the Stewart claim. Following the death of Dundee at Killiecrankie in 1689, Thomas Buchan, 3rd Son of James Buchan of Auchmacoy, was appointed commander-in-chief of all Jacobite forces in Scotland. He received his commission from the King in Ireland and returned to Scotland in April 1690, where he met with Jacobite chiefs at Keppoch.
Throughout a protracted strategic battle with government forces led by General Mackay, Buchan led the Jacobite forces. Following his defeat, he was granted exile in France, but he fought again at the Battle of Sheriffmuir in 1715, and remained loyal to the king until his death in 1721.

Clan Buchan Tartans
The Buchan is a district as well as a family tartan. Although it was a district tartan for the Glenorchy area, it is possibly one of the oldest named setts. This tartan is also known as the Cumming tartan for hunting. The Buchan family adopted it in 1965 due to a family connection with the Cumming dating back to 1210 when Margaret, daughter of King Edgar and Countess of Buchan by her first marriage, married William Coymen, sheriff of Forfar.
The term 'ancient' refers to the lighter dye shades, whereas'modern' refers to the darker dye shades.

A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist.
