Clan Brown / Broun History
The surname Brown, in its more common variant, is a very common name that would normally refer to the color.
The name's Celtic connection could be derived from 'brehon,' a name for a judge in ancient Celtic society.
The name first appears in Scotland in 1128, when Sir David Le Brun was a witness to the foundations of Holyrood Abbey, where he was a benefactor.
The early Brouns claimed to be descended from French royalty, and their coat of arms featured three gold lilies.
Through marriage, the Brouns were linked to large and powerful families such as the Hays, who settled in the Haddington area.
Patrick Broun of Coulston was made a Baronet of Nova Scotia in 1686. A title that has been passed down through the family until the present day.

Bruntsfield House
Bruntsfield House in Edinburgh, a former Clan Brown stronghold. Bruntsfield was named after the Browns/Brouns' 'Broun's Field'. Before they were granted to Alan Lauder of Haltoun in 1381, the lands on which the House was built belonged to Richard Broun.
Castle Carsluith
Carsluith Castle in Galloway was built in the late 1400s or early 1500s by James Lindsay of Fairgirth. Herbert Lindsay, his son, died at the Battle of Flodden in 1513, and the castle passed to him. Carsluith was then passed down through marriage to Richard Brown. The Browns expanded the castle, making it a more formidable fortress. Carsluith Castle was owned by the Brown family until they emigrated to India in 1748, after which it was abandoned. All that is left are the ruins of the castle.

A word about Coats of Arms:
A coat of arms is granted to an individual under Scottish heraldic law (with the exception of civic or corporate arms). A 'family coat of arms' does not exist. With the exceptions noted above, the arms depicted below are personal arms. Only the person who has been granted these weapons has the right to use them.
