Clan Blane History
The name, also spelled Blain, is a diminutive of MacBlain. Wigtown and Ayr are the most common locations.
In 1561, Patrick Blane was provost of Wigtown, and in 1674, John Blain received a charter for half of the ten-merk lands of Meikle-Wig in the parish of Whithorn.
In 1684, Agnes Blain is recorded in the parish of Kirkudbright.
Blahan, presbyter of Linton in East Lothian, witnessed a charter granted to the monks of St Cuthbert at Coldingham by Robert, bishop of St Andrews.

People of Clan Blane
Sir Gilbert Blane, 1st Baronet of Blanefield (1749-1834)
Gilbert Blane was a Scottish doctor. He was born in Ayrshire's Blanefield by Kirkoswald and studied medicine at Edinburgh and Glasgow Universities. He moved to London and worked as Lord Rodney's private physician before becoming Physician to the Fleet and accompanying Rodney to the West Indies in 1779. All sailors took lemon juice to prevent scurvy because of his insistence. Because lemons were unavailable in some Caribbean colonies, limes were substituted, giving rise to the slang term 'limey' (for a British person).
In December 1784, Blane was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society. In 1783, he moved to St Thomas Hospital and became the Prince of Wales', King George IV's, and William IV's physician. During this time, he worked as a government consultant and advocate for public hygiene.
He was created Baronet of Blanefield in 1812. Among his published works are 'Observations on the Diseases of Seamen' and 'Elements of Medical Logic'.
Blane lived in Berkshire at Burghfield and Ayrshire at Kirkoswald. On June 26, 1834, he died in Piccadilly, London.
Clan Blane Tartans
Because there is no registered Blane tartan, those associated with the name can wear the Galloway District tartans, which reflect the clan's geographical origins.
